Just curious...

Downtown Birmingham gets slagged for it's crime, and coming from a Law Enforcement background, I have seen the figures to prove it.

Most of my time has been spent in Homewood, which was wonderful. However, downtown was another story.

Any clue to where "Mega-Bus" leaves one out, and it's surroundings is appreciated!

I found a brief article that said:

"Service begins on Wednesday, November 16th from Morris Avenue between 17th and 18th Street North."

That sounds like the intermodal transit facility downtown. It's the hub for the local bus system as well as Amtrak, on the rare occasion when the Amtrak trains actually stop in Birmingham. It's a fairly new building, but it's a bus station, so . . . I don't think it's unsafe, but it's not a suburban nightclub, either. Have your ride there ready to pick you up and you'll be fine.

Downtown isn't bad. It's when you go east, north, and west of downtown where you have to worry.

Just be cautious of the homeless people, there are quite a few
in that area and they kind of hang out nearby.
Not dangerous, just questionable folks, down on their luck,
possibly substance abusers, just keep a good grip on your bag.

It picks up across from the bus station. Cops always keep that area covered.

It's at the Pace Bus station so just stay inside the station and you can't get hurt due to people.

Smile Safety in Downtown Birmingham

Downtown Birmingham safety stats and info are available at CAP Is Downtown.
The downtown area is quite safe, although of course there are transients at any kind of transportation hub, so do watch your baggage etc., as you should anywhere. In addition to security at the station and the police, there is a supplemental security organization (CAP) that covers downtown and is available to escort you (not a taxi service but will walk with you or give you a ride at night anywhere in the central downtown area); help with stranded motorist issues; give directions, etc. It's a FREE service, just call 205-251-0110 and check out the website for hours and area. Their bikes and vehicles have a flashing green light and they wear red shirts and black pants or shorts.

PS Only one block south is a fabulous new park and a baseball park. Birmingham is famous for good food and music. Welcome!
