If the position comes through, I may be relocating to Birmingham in a few months to take a keeper position at the zoo. Ideally, I would like to find a place to live as close to the zoo as possible. Can anyone tell me if there are any neighborhoods or apartments in that area? Also, what is that area like? High crime?

Thanks!

The zoo is between Homewood and Mountain Brook which are among the highest income and highest quality of life neighborhoods in the country. You will have trouble finding rentals near the zoo because both cities oppose it. There is a very nice development in lane parke going in right across from it. There will be apartments but they will be expensive.

The Zoo has a great central location with plenty of cool places nearby. Southside is great for single folks, and is a hop and a skip from the zoo. Also, there is a huge mixed-use development going up on the opposite side of the Botanical Gardens from the Zoo. Also, there is a big, older apartment complex right up the hill in English Village that has a lot of panache and is an easy stroll from a number of restaurants and night spots.

Just down the 280 connector from the zoo one will find SOHO/DT HOMEWOOD.

Overlooking this is a new area of condos and apartments. HALLMAN HILL. It is surrounded by aLOFT Hotel and lots of restaurants and great shops. (a completely walkable neighborhood and just a mile from Brookwood Village with Target and Fresh Market and Macy's)

This and the above comments are the most immediate offerings although there are many more especially on the South Highlands.

Good fortune and success with the continued rebirth of BIRMINGHAM ZOO.

I have to say that we visiting the Zoo the day after taking my boys to the Compass Bowl and completely enjoyed the visit (even though the flu bug caught up to my son while we were there). Great zoo with very helpful staff and the exhibits were well done.
