I am curious about the area of Skyview Lane in Birmingham. It is near Ruffner Mountain Nature Center and St. Vincent's East Heliport....on a map, it appears to be between East Lake Park and Grayson Valley, if that helps. Viewing the street on Google Earth, it looks quite nice...but I know you can't judge a place based on that. Also, it appears to be somewhat near Center Point, which I have heard is NOT a good neighborhood. Just looking for some insight on this area and other neighborhoods in/around Birmingham to assist us in finding a home there....

I think it is an average neighborhood that is in a bit of a decline. I'm thinking the street you are describing is in Huffman. The east side is in a bit of a flux because of rising crime and business struggling but it still has a lot of people and it is where the city and metro will experience more growth.

Unfortunately for families in the mean time it means a bad school system and having to drive to Trussville, Leeds or 280 for decent shopping. Parkway east/75 seems busy and vibrant from satellite view but it is mostly car dealers, fast food, title pawns and check cashing places.

Roebuck Springs, and much of Huffman are nice areas over there. I think it will be an area of focus in the near future, hopefully, to be revamped...the Parkway that is.

Tourian more or less nailed it............I'd say the area's OK. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being the worst), I'd say it's a 5 or 6. It really isn't terrible, but not great either. If crime happens in your neck of the woods, don't be surprised, but at the same time, it's FAR from a war zone. Lots of neighborhoods in Birmingham are much worse than that one.
