Growing up, Oxmoor was always just a no man's land of light industry and commercial parks between Homewood and West End, and was just a place to street race on weekends. But could it become a more coveted Biotech Research Park too?

This was mentioned in another thread:
Germany's Evonik chooses Birmingham for its first U.S. Innovation Center for research and development | AL.com

Quote:
German-based Evonik Corp. said today Birmingham will be home to its first global "Innovation Center" in the U.S., creating 25 high-skilled jobs.

The new Innovation Center will focus on medical devices and will be housed in Evonik's current corporate campus off Lakeshore Parkway in Birmingham's Oxmoor Valley.
But how about this as well:

UAB School of Medicine, HudsonAlpha to create joint center for genomic medicine - Birmingham Business Journal

Quote:
The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine and Huntsville-based HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology are teaming up to create a new genomic medicine research facility.
Now, this facilty will most likely be built on UAB campus - but the move towards highly skilled medical research jobs gaining local and international attention in the city is great news and further proof for the professional critics that like to think of Birmingham as a one trick steel pony that is played out.

I just want to know when Umbrella corp is coming to build a facility here...

Biotech jobs in the area on the upswing where much of the country saw declines:

Birmingham biotech market faring better than other tech hubs - Birmingham Business Journal

Quote:
According to clustermapping.us, Alabama also ranked high on the number of medical device jobs created, coming in fifth nationally with 823 jobs created from 2008 to 2010.
Birmingham led the state in terms of biopharma jobs created and ranked 37th followed immediately by Auburn at 38th out of 386 metro areas. Birmingham created 270 biopharma jobs and Auburn created 255.

I have been thinking about a research park in Oxmoor Valley for a long time, along with the office and industrial parks already there. I figures since University Blvd was kind of the "research blvd", Oxmoor Valley would be out of the question, but maybe not.

I would be worried about one of their biological experiments going awry, resulting in gigantic mutant golfers running amok at Ross Bridge.

That is a concern, and why I was worried about Umbrella in my first post. One of the best movie trailers ever:

I'm not so keen on this deal. HUDSONALPHA of Madison County has just entered this field in the past couple of years in that area and already are siphoning funds that could have gone to UAB research and SOUTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE. (there is only so much each year to go around)
There is no physical structure involved with this collaboration, just office space here and in Madison County. There is no advantage for Birmingham in this collaboration. It just helps to shift what has historically been a Birmingham focus to the Madison area as well. ( Gov. Bentley's push for all but central Alabama)

Competing for research dollars is big business, so this is questionable, and most likely is very favorable for HA, but I have not found what this area is suppose to find in the deal.

This year the head of HA became the head of the state agency overseeing the biotech development in the state. He replaces the head of SOUTHERN RESEARCH.
So now the state agency has shifted focus to the north away from Birmingham.

Why are they even bothering with UAB? I suspect that based on the nature of genomic research they only need UAB for its access to many disparate diseases that are the foundation of the research, and not found in small medical facilities such as those in Madison County.

I hope I am wrong but nothing about this looks positive for Birmingham in the long run. When the results come in, the actually development work will shift to Madison County.

Yes! Now imagine that on TV without any sort of preamble or indication of what it is. It caught a lot of people off guard.

The attention Madison County gets from the Governor is grossly out of bounds. He might as well just move the Capitol up there since he likes it there so much.

Someone needs to inform him that almost 30% of state tax revenues come from the Birmingham Metro area. (does he really want to dry that up?)

Governor Bentley has very little if anything to do with everything that is happening in the Magic City right now. It would be wonderful to have more assistance from the state level... But we can also be proud that it's the citizens of this great city that are having a huge impact.

Historically, most of the governors of Alabama have either shown very little attention to Birmingham or almost seem to have a vendetta against the city... Maybe because of the city typically being more liberal than the rest of the state.

I'm hoping he will at least get on board with the Kaiser Facility.
