Maybe taking job at southeastern Birmingham. Job location near Cahaba lake area. Have two boys 14 and 11 so schools are very important as well as work commute. What area would be best to live and where are the best school districts. Don't mind living in the country but a nice neighborhood would be ok. Willing to spend between 300k - 400k for home. Schools, commute, and nice home preferably 10 years old or less.

OK

Do you mean Lake Purdy. There is no Lake Cahaba to my knowledge.

If so and you are interested in southeastern Birmingham, Liberty Park would be an excellent location for you. A beautiful natural setting with a variety of home options and prices and Vestavia Hills schools, among the best in the south.

I-459 makes it convenient to virtually everywhere. Although, if you were to be working in the SE of BHM you would most likely have little commute and not even have to get on a freeway. In that area Grants Mill Road can get dicey.

Good luck

Cahaba Lake...as in Inverness? If so the area is covered by Hoover School system. There's mid to high dollar neighborhoods nearby like Brook Highland and Meadowbrook to high dollar ones like Greystone and Highland Lakes. But in between that a slew of subdivisions up and down Valleydale and 119. Eagle Point, Altadena Woods and on and on. Plenty of places where 3-400k will get you a decent fairly new home.

However the commute is the issue. 280 is rough during rush. They've done a lot to improve it since I lived out there so I do not know how much the Michigan Left situation has made it better, but it can only be fair to bad as opposed to awful like it used to be by my guess.

If you want more country life, you can push further down over Double Oak Mountain and find a place in Chelsea or Sterrett but that just makes the commute that much tougher.

Of course if you mean some other area entirely different area...

Yes I would be west of lake purdy and Meadowbrook. Just off of 495 between 38 and 65.

West of Meadow Brook is not in SE BHM. Meadow Brook is west of Lake Purdy. If you knew the area you might work in and you state how many miles you are willing to commute people would be able to give you more accurate information instead of guessing.

There are plenty of home options in your stated range along I-459. It would help to know if you are talking east or west of I-65. (38 rings no bell for me) I-65 and US280 are the main routes south out of DT. Everything east of US280 is considered SE of BHM. SW is west of I-65.

Good luck

East of 65 near Altadena valley country club. So west of 280. Job location is right on the highway 459. Willing to travel 30 minutes. But schools is probably more important.

Plenty of superior systems within a five-mile radius of that location: Mountain Brook, Vestavia, Hoover, Homewood. Can't really go wrong with any of those.

Hoover's Spain Park High and Middle School are just two to three miles south of the Acton (Altadena) Road exit of I-459. Then down Acton Road, right on Caldwell Mill Road. Some wonderful neighborhoods along this corridor with good neighborhood shopping very near by. Established and new construction in the middle of your price suggestion.

Great parks and for you almost no commuting. This area is directly south of the central city and midway between the cities largest retail areas.

OP is probably talking about Cahaba Lake, near the intersection of Acton Rd and 459. This isn't anywhere close to Lake Purdy. There is an office park over there, International Park which may be where his job is located. In that case there are tons of options in North Shelby County and Hoover in that price range with good schools.
