Because Hipsters are the antithesis of good ol' boys, rednecks, hunters, NASCAR fans, BAMA fans, pickup truck drivers, country or suburban-living people, etc, etc, etc. Basically the vast majority of the Alabama population.

It isn't "virtually nonexistent" but that just falls into the trap of circular semantic argument where you will try to argue that anything less than Nashville or New York or wherever is "non existant" and that is something I don't care to do.

But it is ironic that you talk about national commercial impact when one of the main tenants of hipsterism is that they abhor mainstream commercialism. They love obscure indie bands that no one has heard of. That's the kind of thing the Nick, Saturn, and the Bottletree (used to) and others thrive on.

But, keep fighting the good fight Steve.

There's plenty of people in Birmingham who don't fall into any of those groups.

I've never seen so many people defending B'ham in all my life. B'ham is not the NYC of Alabama or the LA of Alabama. Maybe if you live in Mountain Brook it is. But I can assure you that good ole boys, rednecks, hunters, all that other name references are all over B'ham metro.

That poster was talking about the state as a whole out of ignorance and maybe even stupidity. There are plenty of hipsters in Mobile. The bohemian and hipster crowd reside in the downtown and midtown areas of the city. You don't have to search high in low in Mobile for them and i'm sure B-ham is thr same way.

Being from Birmingham but now in Atlanta, I can say the hipster scene and culture isn't that large and prevalent in Atlanta as people would assume. The areas people assume that are hipster are mostly mainstream commercialized at this point. It's here of course, but like Birmingham it is in the backdrop. The only true hipster area in Atlanta are the Five Points/Virginia Highlands and Kirkwood areas of East Atlanta. I recall prior to my most recent relocation from Birmingham that the hipster scene and culture does exist in Birmingham but it mostly on and around the UAB campus, Lakeview, Glen Iris, and the Five Points South areas at the time. Woodlawn is an emerging area and Avondale has already become one although most wouldn't know unless they know individuals residing in the community. Homewood somewhat has one as well but it is mostly around its downtown and SoHo neighborhood, but it is probably the only area outside of Birmingham city proper in the entire metro area that has the figments of one.

I agree 100% with this. Atlanta has honestly been made out to be something that it truly is NOT. People think it's some glorious city. When, in fact, it is just another city. For a city of its size, it really doesn't have much to do nor does it have as much culture as it should.

When has Atlanta ever been made out to be some sort of hipster mecca? And who calls it some glorious city? As for culture, it is ground zero for blacks... but other than that, yeah it lacks culture. You are right, it is just another city... it just happens to be about 5x the size of Birmingham... and because of that has an enormous selection of things to do that cities like Birmingham do not.
