We've touched on the subject in other threads but this transcends football. How should UAB proceed? Is the brand "UAB" important to protect or does BU or U of B have a better ring to it since it seems Birmingham stands alone in this state?

Consider the numbers in this article:

Shocking numbers UA & UAB

Quote:
Something remarkable has occurred*since UAB became the University Extension Center of the University of Alabama in 1936.

UAB now dwarfs UA.

Here are the operating and non-operating revenues of the University of Alabama and UAB*:

UA *******$903,893,251

UAB **$2,816,955,642

UAB’s revenues are triple UA’s.

In fact, UAB’s revenues are much larger than the total revenues for The University of Alabama, UAH, and Auburn combined.* (UAH*$216,841,929;*Auburn $926,457,772)
Of course it is logical since UAB is the only one in the system that has a huge for profit hospital in the middle of it but it never occurred to me the how big the gap was or how little say the school has in the grand scheme of things.

Something has to be done, but what?

Quote:
Instead of us beating up UAB for being a servant to the University of Alabama—we should stand up for UAB and demand one of the following:

Stronger board and campus representation
Elected board members
Independence

I have been so for this, and these numbers show the need for independence. I think "BU" has a nice ring to if...sounds al ost Ivy League. Haha

Trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

There simply isn't enough room in Birmingham for a 3rd college football team, and they abhorrent locale of their home games was not helping the problem.

Indeed, it is time for UAB to move on...

What makes you think that there isn't enough room? What proof?

But football isn't the focus here. Why should Tuscaloosa-centric board control a college who has revenue that far exceeds its own? If UAB wants to spend money on a "sow's ear", should it be up to them and not a group of have conflicting interest?

I'm tired of the rhetoric that Bham can't handle a 3rd team. Alabama and Auburn aren't everything and plenty of teams prove that all over the state. This isn't about UAB football eclipsing UA or AU... That may never happen. But, there is definitely room as Troy proves every weekend in their "new" stadium.

Its a nice article, but looking here:

http://uasystem.ua.edu/wp-content/up...nal-Report.pdf

Their expenses are quite high compared to their revenues. I'm guessing much of this is related to the hospital.

Colleges IMHO aren't about Revenues. State funded colleges should in essence break even.

I do agree though the BOT is UA centric and shouldn't have as much voice or any voice in that matter with UAB and its hospital.

Keep the name. Keep the brand. Change the words.

UAB - The University at Birmingham

A UAB that's free from the thumb of Tuscaloosa is THE key to a thriving Birmingham. Which is why many will fight against it.
