Great news obviously. But UAB has got to start pushing for more architecturally interesting buildings.

Yes, and that rendering is of the building as seen from the green. There is another rendering of the building as seen from the 14th and 10th intersection.

Gasp! Are you tired of the red brick?

No, I'm kidding. Do you have an example of another existing building you think would be better? I ask because when I first saw that, I thought it was clean, nice and functional building. Doesn't seem too fancy or outlandish and that it looked fine. But I totally get that it isn't very flashy or eye catching and will blend in completely with the red brick that is most of south side. Maybe that is what they want for the budget and image they are trying to portray or maybe fancy architecture costs more...

Well, anything is better than those early 70s concrete abominations they started out with.

I don't see the problem with it. It doesn't look as modern as the new student center, but it bridges the gap between 1980 and today.

For what Birmingham lacks in density and sheer size, it does have a good mix of architecture. 20-30 years from now I am sure that all the 4-6 story apartments that have gone up in the last few years will date themselves, just as boxy skyscrapers date Houston's entire skyline. Birmingham has a good mix of 100 year old buildings with ornate facades, meh buildings like UAB's oldest buildings, the 80s style skyscrapers like Harbert, AT&T, Wells Fargo, etc... It missed out on the 90s/00s era towers, so now it just needs some from today.

Speaking of... any news on Vesta? It seems like not that long ago that it felt borderline dead and then new life was breathed into it when it got a name and construction date (albeit not the first). But looking back, that was a year ago and construction was supposed to have started last summer as of the time of that news. Anything more recent than that?

Also, any updates on Box Row in Avondale? It was supposed to be open by now but I'm not sure if construction has even started?
