Southside's Battery mixed-use development to expand with hotel, oyster bar and more:

https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingh..._news_headline

"The Battery development on Birmingham’s Southside is about to get bigger with the renovation of a historic grocery store and brothel across the street.

Ward Neely of Property Partners is launching Battery II, a 40,000-square-foot extension of the development on Second Avenue South in a bid to transform that section of the Automotive Historic District.

“I want to continue the positive momentum and energy in phase I and create a new district for Birmingham,” Neely said. “Hopefully, this area becomes the Battery.”

Last year, Neely’s affiliate, Magic City Slicker LLC, acquired several buildings that make up the project and received approval for federal and state historic tax credits that will be allocated in 2022.

The project team includes Neely Construction, Fifth Dimension Architecture & Interiors, and Chris Eckroate of Caprine Engineering.

Battery II is a $10 million project that includes space for several retail shops, restaurants as well as a brewery, coffee concept, craft cocktail bar and an oyster bar in a shipping container.

“This will be more like an old Florida dive bar,” Neely said of the oyster bar. “We expect people in business attire sitting next to someone in jorts with a tank top. We’ve built the Battery as a melting pot and the oyster bar should be a reflection of that.”

The second and third floors of the Raden Boarding House Building will house a fully automated hotel with 22 rooms in a space that was historically used as a brothel, Neely said."

New downtown Birmingham parking deck gets green light:

https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingh..._news_headline

"Birmingham’s Design Review Committee approved plans for a new parking deck downtown.

It’s a project by Ascent Hospitality Management, the Georgia-based company that renovated the historic Elyton building and others for two hotels on First Avenue North.

The new deck would provide 702 parking spaces on 10 levels for the hotels and a restaurant in the Elyton, developer John Tampa previously told the Birmingham Business Journal. Tampa said there are no immediate plans to begin construction on the deck right now given market uncertainty due to the coronavirus."

Hard to tell much from the one rendering, but doesn't look like any type of screening on the deck or street level activity. Our DRC is near useless.

Where are they pulling the name "Battery" from? Was this the location of a Civil War artillery battery?

I do not know where Battery came from, but it certainly wasn't that. AFAIK the city did not exist in any capacity during the Civil War.

I think it's where Birmingham Electric Battery Co. was formerly located.

Looking at the construction camera for protection stadium, and I can't help but notice that it looks like a tower crane is being erected on the right lower side of the bowl. Am I mistaken??

Sucks that these larger complexes won’t be ready in time for the 2020 Census due to delays (Vesta, Metropolitan, Lakeview Green, and 20 Midtown were all originally scheduled to be completed by now).

Obviously there are much more important things in the world right now than construction projects / development, but I will be interested to see how it all will impact all the projects in the city. The BBJ mentioned last week that it has already caused some projects to be delayed / canceled. I would imagine for now projects can continue on just fine, but who knows in a few weeks. The BJCC got dealt a really bad hand, they had 3 big concerts in the Arena in the month of March before they closed down to renovations. Now they won't be able to reschedule those in the Arena anytime soon.
