Default Amazon...again??

https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingh...lakeshore.html

BBJ articles suggests that Amazon looking to build a logistic facilty next to Dollar General warehouse on Lakeshore. They had proposed a site in North Birmingham before. Don't know if that plan fell through or not. Doubt they build on both sites, plus the Century Plaza site. Amazon already a fulfillment center in Bessemer and a sortation facilty in North Birmingham and is building a final mile facility in Eastwood. So that's three amazon buildings plus perhaps another one on the way.

this (presumably) opens up that piece of land in parkside for development now (and gets rid of another eyesore along i-65 through downtown):

Sherman Industries buys property in Tarrant

this view is about to get much better:

Right next to ABC Coke plant. Vacant land out by that plant.

Long-vacant American Red Cross building in Birmingham getting $30M rehab into apartments:

https://alabamanewscenter.com/2020/0...to-apartments/

This is a great project from the same developer as the American Life building.

Excellent use of the former Red Cross building. It's in a great location being one block off the restaurants/bars on 2nd ave N.

thank god. that thing is an eyesore.

maybe the most interesting takeaway from that article, however, is this...

"Ticheli said residents will begin moving into the 140 apartments at the 12-story American Life building in October of this year. There is pre-planning for a second phase of the American Life building that would add another 350 apartments along with retail and service spaces.

American Life is a block away from the American Red Cross building and Ticheli sees synergy between the two projects."

Yeah that has been alluded to in articles in the past:

https://www.alabamanewscenter.com/20...e-initiatives/

Ticheli is eyeing an additional project next to the American Life building.

“Hopefully we will get the other 400 units up next door in time to come, with retail and a 600-space parking deck,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a game-changer. You’re right by the highway. If we put a nice little grocery story in here, I think it’s going to be fantastic.”

My understanding is where the big long parking lot is they'd build a development with retail / grocery / shops / whatever on the bottom, then a few levels of parking, and more units on top.

There is a huge block off 24th St. across from the downtown Post Office that could be what they are aiming at putting the additional units at. Th large parking lot right behind the American Life Building would be for that building presumable. Currently the construction crew trailers are currently on the block across from the post office.

Plus how tall would 350 more apartment units for a building with ground floor retail be. The spot next to the parking lot in the back don't leave much space for horizontal.
