Earlier this year, the Birmingham City Council approved several incentives for Illinois-based architectural firm Next Chapter Properties to develop a $55 million housing project for students at UAB.

The project is known as Pipeline, and would be located right between Regions Field and the UAB Campus Green. The seven-story development would include five floors of student housing, with 160 studio, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartment units.

* Earlier this year, the Birmingham Business Journal reported that local design/build firm Creature was planning a new micro-unit student housing project in downtown Birmingham. The project—named The Citizen—would be solely for renters and cater to students and medical workers at UAB.

Six stories tall, The Citizen would offer 140 micro-unit apartments at 350 square-feet each, just like The Railyard. Additionally, the ground floor would boast 3,000 square-feet of retail space.

The project is designed in response to the all-new Birmingham Master Plan‘s emphasis on walkability and micro-transit. Although The Citizen would include off-site parking, residents would have access to electric vehicle charging stations and Zipcar spaces—plus, it’ll be located right on the upcoming Birmingham Xpress rapid bus system line.
i had been wondering about The Citizen and the Next Chapter developments... glad to hear they're still a go.

One of the big problems at the moment? A lack of construction workers. If you can show up sober, swing a hammer, or carry some bricks, someone will grab onto you with both hands.

I think there are roughly 16+ residential developments under construction at the moment within a 5 miles radius of downtown, with maybe about 5,6 (at the moment) that should get started this year. Then throw in the two construction projects in Uptown, UAB continuous construction, commercial properties constructions...a lot going on.

Yep. We're trying to start a big renovation. Kitchen, two baths, the living room. Nice residential project, money in hand and everything. Can't even find a contractor who can start before June.

Not to the mention that area is also constructing the Village Creek Greenway trail https://www.al.com/news/birmingham/2...y_in_ensl.html which phase 1 is currently open, with plans to connect it to the Thomas neighborhood and eventually to East Lake.

So you have ....

The Village Creek Greenway trail, from Ensley to East Lake

The High Ore Line trail https://freshwaterlandtrust.org/2019/08/high-ore-open/ from Midfield to Red Mountain Park

The Jones Valley trail https://www.traillink.com/trail/jones-valley-trail/ from Parkside to Avondale

Milwaukee developer acquires former Bessemer city hall ahead of mixed-use project

"The Milwaukee-based firm plans to bring 40 mixed-income housing units in an adaptive reuse of the building along with 600 square feet of commercial space. Que El-Amin, principal at Scott Crawford, said construction is expected to begin once the property is rezoned and construction financing is in place."

BLOX exec buys Bessemer train depot for new community project

"The BLOX executive is spearheading a project that looks to further the momentum in downtown Bessemer by redeveloping the former train depot at the corner of Carolina Avenue and 18th Street North into a hub for the community centered around healthy food options the arts and music."
