However, I'm not gonna blame this one on a governor nor am I going to say that an accountant shouldn't be the head of ALDOT
The state department of transportation should be ran by a professional engineer or a certified transportation planner. An accountant has absolutely no business being in charge of daily operations of a transportation agency. That person can go run the Department of Revenue where their talents and skills are more pertinent. Ultimately, the success or failure of the project does fall into the lap of the governor, and Ivey kept the accountant as the ALDOT head.

I agree. The Administrator of NASA some years ago (Golden) was an accountant or at least some sort of money guy. The Agency is much better led by a technical guy, in my opinion. Same for the state department of transportation.

classic example of aldot not in touch with the actual roads. Everything they do is from comfy offices on computers. The sign division should have mandatory field visits and drive the roads they are signing.
Mandatory map study of the state, learn where the roads actually go.

Actually, to get those signs right they didn't have to be on site but just have a little knowledge of the numbering system ... odd numbers go north and south, even numbers go east and west. That mistake undoubtably caused a bit of confusion for the high volume of thru traffic that B'ham has, and for those unfamiliar with the roadways there.

That rule doesn't apply for spurs though, even though Aldot must have thought it did at one time ... 565 in Huntsville was designated N & S for a while after it first opened, although it goes basically east and west off I-65. People were used to thinking of Decatur as being west of Huntsville, so the designation was confusing, and after a bit of research they changed the signage to show E & W.
