Hi guys,

I am looking to move within the next 6-9 months and I was wondering about the great city of Birmingham. I am from Memphis so I am used to being in the South but I have a couple of quick questions.

1)Is 35-40k Possible to Live Off On and Live By Myself?

2) Is the nightlife good for young African Americans?

3)Is the job economy good?

Details: 25, no kids, Bachelors, industry is in HR/Recruiting/Talent Acquisition

1. Yes. The COL is probably a little bit less than Memphis, but not so much that it will be particularly noticeable.

2. Yes. Like Memphis, Birmingham is predominately black and the city offers many venues that cater to that crowd.

3. I don't know. I wouldn't move anywhere unless I had a job already lined up.

Are concerts/comedy shows in abundance in Birmingham? What's the average rent for a 700 sq foot apt?

We don't always get the biggest names, but lots of good comedians have played in the area. Plenty of concerts.

Depends on where it is. Probably around $650 for where you'll want to live.

Ooh nice! Doesn't have to be in a fancy locale, just safe and clean.

Yes
Yes
Yes
Rents in Birmingham are some the cheapest in the country. Thousands of more expensive apartments are coming online, so it is unlikely that rents for average apartments are going to be able to increase that much in the near future.

The inner southern ring of suburbs (Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, etc) + 280 (Birmingham) are where most of the nice newish apartments are with rents you'll be happy with.

Plenty are being built downtown in Parkside, Midtown and Lakeview, but I imagine these will be in high demand and are skewed towards luxury.

If you are looking for nightlife and culture you will want to around Southside, Glen Iris, Downtown. Downtown will be expensive though.
