The race course location would in essence be starting from scratch. Either way, this is likely a step in the right direction.

Yep. Putting an upscale casino in the downtown area simply creates more synergy between everything else going on downtown. Meanwhile, sticking the thing out by a dilapidated failed race course with no nearby amenities is small ball.

They will demolish the race course building, not add on to it. Plus just like with downtown, opportunities to invest around the area will present itself as well.

Yeah. But it's still far away from other amenities.

The problem is one of having a distinctive venue. Casinos are becoming a dime a dozen out there, with outposts in places such as backwood Mississippi, Atmore, and other places. So sticking an outpost out in the hinterlands (Apologies to those in places such as Trussville, but it's not even close to that) makes it just another casino.

Meanwhile, if you put it downtown near the stadium, restaurants, and the Civic Center, it helps to create a larger draw for the area in general. Without having to wait for additional investment to take place.

People to me seem to go to casinos to gamble. Not to go to restaurants, bars, events, etc. People literally spend all day and night inside casinos, then leave and go home. Nothing is around casinos in Atmore, Wetumpka or the one in Montgomery. Yet those places be packed everyday. Casinos have food and drinks options inside of them and some has events there as well. Do you really think the state of alabama would put a casino in downtown Birmingham. Lucky enough for Birmingham to be even an option. Just my opinion.

Carraway Casino has a nice ring to it. Change that big star on top to a dollar sign.

But I'm thinking cheap land is all they are after and the dog track has the taint of gambling already on it.

Perhaps. And my view is limited, but I think there is a large segment of the population that doesn't gamble regularly but would go for the occasional night of fun, concerts, food, etc. Placing a casino away from all of those other amenities all but guarantees I won't be visiting much if the primary draw is simply a large structure in which to gamble.

I don't know about that. My wife and I went to Las Vegas for three days a few years ago. We put $5 in a video poker machine, shrugged and left. However, LV in and of itself was kind of cool.

With all due with respect, but comparing Las Vegas and to downtown Birmingham. But it is what it is, though.

yeah, las vegas obviously has developed in a way to cater to casino goers during their "downtime". you can walk out of a casino and you're immediately greeted with all sorts of other options (food, drink, lights, shows, people watching, etc). and everyone else you see is doing the same thing.

as much of a proponent as i am of downtown, i'm fine with this existing at the race course.
