There isn't really that strong of a correlation between a bankrupt county due to horrible management and corruption and the overall health of the economy of that county. It's not like when the county went through bankru[tcy all businesses and industry in the county shut down. You know this.

It would be a strong correlation if it had gone the other way and Jeffco had come out looking bad in this ranking and someone had come along to point this out about it and Birmingham inclusively (but of course not Mountain Brook, Homewood or Vestavia). And you and I know you would have nothing say to the contrary.

So again. Not bad for a county just out of bankruptcy.

I agree with you 100% Tourian. Of course, some will refuse to give Jefferson County credit for its economic success. Bankruptcy is very hard to bounce back from, but JeffCo has rebounded quite nicely.

Exactly Gotluv. No one knew exactly what would happen but it certainly did not cast a favorable out look for growth on the county's future which is why a specious comment like: "It's not like when the county went through bankru[tcy all businesses and industry in the county shut down." is an unfounded strawman. The source article is not about the total amount of existing GDP of all Alabama counties vs one another it is about the rate of growth over the past few years vs each other's. Jeffco came out on top despite an unfavorable outlook and adverse conditions.

All Jeffco needs to do is work on its recruitment of young educated professionals, innovative companies, and the rest will take care of itself. Birmingham is now on many recruitment lists for cities with growing number of opportunities and amenities for young professionals.

I vividly remember back when talk started about possibly filing bankruptcy. Everybody I talked to felt like it would be a devastating blow for the county. On top of all that, it was getting national attention, because it was the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history at the time. I remember feeling like we would never be able to recruit another company to the area, and that we would start to lose the ones we already had. It was a very depressing period. We now lead the entire state in GDP growth! That is amazing, and for anyone to think otherwise is pure insanity.

Birmingham's lodging revenue up because of more visitors! The city is definitely winning right now.

Anybody other than me notice that the old and ugly Readymix cement plant in downtown Birmingham has been completely demolished? The silos and tanks are gone, and I couldn't be happier! For those of you who don't know the location, it was next to the new Social Security building.

That plant closed back in 2010 or maybe 2011 so I guess it was a bit overdue to be knocked down. I don't know of any immediate plans to develop the site though.

There was a story in the Birmingham News back in 2010 that announced the closing and possible demolition. I agree with you about the demolition being overdue.
