Title should say West... not East... doh

On google maps West of Birmingham, you can see miles and miles of woods, with dirt roads leading to thousands of clearings all over the place. I have been through the wildlife management area down Coalmont Rd, West of Helena where the gas pipeline exploded, and there is a bunch of machinery throughout the area that looks like oil drills or something. Most of the dirt roads are blocked with a gate. What is going on in all of these areas, and who owns it? Why are there gas pipelines and drills scattered all over protected wildlife land?
