The Smart Cities Council said the following about selecting the Magic City: "Birmingham works diligently to ensure that its initiatives benefit multiple departments and multiple populations. The city will use the Council’s Readiness Roadmap to provide a collaborative framework for the many projects it has underway, including an Open Data portal, smart street lighting, community Wi-Fi, bus rapid transit, and a violence reduction initiative that uses data to spot problems early."
The Smart Cities initiative has only been implemented in only a few US cities, and the closest one that is 'phase II' of their implementation is Atlanta with "SmartATL". Ironically, Birmingham officials have spoken upon the possibility of University Boulevard, 20th Street, or Richard Arrington, Jr. Boulevard as the first "smart corridor" in the City of Birmingham. This will definitely help the City get on the forefront of innovation of technological advancements in civic infrastructure. Many of these components are tied to the City getting ready for the World Games and more aggressive economic development recruitment.
