Thought it had been there, or at least reserved, for years.

256/938 has been an overlay since 2011 with required 10-digit dialing.

It has been reserved for several years. Will be interesting to see if it actually happens.

Guys, 256/938 is North Alabama/Huntsville.

Birmingham still has 205 and is getting a new overlay of 659.

https://www.bizjournals.com/birmingh...n-central.html

So now our friends in Bham will get the pleasure of dialing 10 digits even though almost nobody will have the new 659 area code. Same like here just about nobody has 938.

I wonder if 659 is a nod to I-59.

Doubt it. I don't know of any area code assignment that works like that.

Yeah, I realize that. I just said a new overlay for the 205 area code had been around for years; it even showed up for a while (when we had real telephone directories) on the Alabama map that was in the front of the book.

It was just an observation that 356/938 was an overlay and we've had required 10-digit dialing here for years ... a parallel if you will. I'm pretty much used to it now so it's not an issue. I assumed 205 already had that requirement as well.

There's a similar overlay, 769, for th 601 area code in Mississippi that seems to be getting used a little.

When we got the 938 code activated here, whoever does the assigning may not have foreseen that many of those with cell phones would drop landlines, so really needing it might be taking longer than they thought.
