If I didn't care much about entertainment but wanted a safe area, decent-nice hotel for about a week which area would be ideal to find a safe hotel? By safe I mean low (if any) crime), decent clean room and no need to worry about car theft/vandalism. Ideally it would be somewhat quiet so that I can concentrate and write but not tooo far from everything IF I decide I want to go out and just enjoy.

I was especially thinking about being in Inverness but not sure about it's pros and cons.

I'm a young black female who will be there alone after my friend leaves. Only mentioning this because I don't care to be somewhere where I am completely unwelcome based on this (if that even exists).

Based on what I've said Please rate the places in question or give your opinion on the area. My main concern is always safety. Thanks so much

birmingham airport
central birmingham
hoover
inverness area
irondale
oxmoor- homewood
pelham

Airport - NO
Central Birmingham - Fine, but there's not much in the way of food. Good hotels include the Tutwiler
Hoover - Fine, out in the suburbs with plenty of shopping and restaurants
Inverness - same as Hoover
Irondale - not preferred
oxmoor - homewood...should be fine
pelham - OK too.

People will be friendly. There are a lot of black people here so you will be in good company!

Great. Thanks a ton!

This info is VERY helpful. I'm thinking Inverness or Hoover is where I want to be.

Was wondeirng, does that mean the airport is a dangerous area or simply undesireable?

I LOVE diversity of all different kinds of people but I am so glad to hear that I won't be out of place. lol.

Well, if you just need a place to write and hang out, may I suggest Ross Bridge? It's a great resort in the Oxmoor Valley area. And really, if you're white, black, yellow, red, or green with eyestalks, nobody really worries about that stuff in the 'ham anymore.

I still think Five Points area (The Highland Hotel) is where you want to be. Just a great mix of nightlife, restaurants, and nice areas to walk. But if you're serious about holing up and writing, then Ross Bridge would be ideal. As long as you recognize that it will be a haul to any restaurants outside of the hotel grounds.

It is like all airports. Noise, traffic, hotel lounges, people coming and going.

The Wynfrey Hotel in Hoover. The Galleria mall is attached and you will be around everything in a safe area.

Yes - both!
Ross Bridge - VERY nice, but VERY expensive. Most writers I know don't have that kind of dough LOL!
Wynfrey--great location, hotel only OK. The rooms are quite small...and for that kind of money I'd want something a LOT better! You might check tripadvisor.com and see what other hotels are in the area.

I made a speech at a conference held at the Winfrey recently...it is undergoing a renovation, floor by floor. The old, unrefinished room are in pretty bad shape while the new ones are said to be great...

I have to admit, that if I were look for a place to hole up and not be disturbed, I would go to a state park such as Joe Wheeler near Florence. Last time we stayed there, the accommodations were really nice. Of course you'd have to drive there.

All that being said, if you're staying in the 'ham, Hotel Highland remains your best choice.

The vast majority of those of us who have lived in Birmingham all our lives would welcome you, as a young black female, just as we'd welcome anyone, so don't worry about that!

birmingham airport - Big NOOOOO. Very unsafe area.
central birmingham - No. Very crowded, not too safe at night.
hoover - Nice area, lots of shopping and places to eat, but not a lot of hotels
inverness area - Very nice area, lots of stuff to do, several nice hotels
irondale - there's not really anything out there that I'm aware of in the way of nicer hotels
oxmoor- homewood - I wouldn't recommend it
pelham - very quiet, nice area, less expensive hotels, but not as nice as Inverness
