Just me, but I really liked it, as opposed to the open-air design now. I just recall it being more relaxing personally. My friend who has a fear of heights, couldn't handle the new design, but enjoyed the old one as much as me.

Did they sell Vulcan merch in the enclosed observation deck? I want to say they did, but it's been so long.

If anyone has any pics, or links to photos of the old deck, I would love to see them! Thanks...

Also, how is crime in that area? Is the park safe at dusk, when the beauty of the view is really best? Curious how the area has changed in 10 years.

Enclosed? I go so far back that I remember a catwalk that had only a waist-high wrought-iron railing around it! Back in the mid-60's, Vulcan was generally empty and made a great place for us "Southside Street Rats" to hang out and pretend to be tough (even though most of us went to the same churches and belonged to the same Scout Troop ). It was great for launching paper airplanes and having spitting contests!

It used to be free, now they charge for it. No idea why, not that great. There is a museum tour included, which really consists of nothing. I guess it is to help offset the cost of renovation.

I usually don't post in the AL forum, but saw the headline and had to read it. Last October I drove thru your fair city on my way to visit family in Tallahassee, FL. It was the first time I'd spent any time in Birmingham, and I was very impressed. I stayed out at a hotel on the Interstate, but next day I drove around and explored. Very impressive. I checked out Bessemer (I like historic districts), downtown Birmingham, the Five Points South (I think that's what it was called) area, the civil rights area, and went up to see the Vulcan statue. Was disappointed they charged to go up, but can understand why--somebody's got to pay for it.

Anyway, you guys have a great looking city. I'm looking forward to going back some day.

I remember the enclosed deck. It always smelled of urine. I really like what they've done with it.
