Anyone other than me realize that the city of Birmingham has gone from having an abandoned mall and two abandoned hospitals, to all three becoming major economic development projects? With all the progress happening in the city, it's easy to forget where we were just a couple years ago. The abandoned Century Plaza Mall is being demolished to make way for an Amazon facility and a few hundred jobs. Also, the two abandoned hospitals, Trinity and Caraway, are being demolished to make way for massive mixed-use residential/ entertainment/hospitality developments. There are several other examples including Pizitz, T.J. Tower, Denham, New Ideal, etc.

i was trying to think the other day what the biggest/tallest building was that didn't have some sort of renovation/redevelopment going on. liberty national?

I think you're right about Liberty National being the largest one not currently being re-developed. Only a matter of time though. I can't wait for Powell Avenue Steam Plant to be completed and vibrant. Gonna be huge for the Parkside District! Hell, even Ramsay McCormack is currently under construction! What's happening in the city right now is amazing!

It is my understanding that asbestos is the big concern with the Liberty National building. Schmalz (Guy who is continuing to develop Midtown) bought it out of foreclosure a few years ago, but the original owners exercised the redemption clause and retook possession.
If it weren't for asbestos, UAB would have likely snapped it up by now. Now, no telling what's going to happen to it.

Making something positive and profitable out of Carraway is to me the most important of these followed closely by the Ensley project. Nah, maybe its the other way around.

I think the building is clean and stablized. Two years ago, the city and county had put in a bid for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to brings a division to the buidling.

IIRC, isn't that where BBVA proposed their new midrise a few years back? Fairly certain the HB56 crap the state embraced killed any chance of that happening.
