Birmingham, AL, property crime, on a scale from 1 (low) to 10, is 8. Property crime includes the offenses of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The object of the theft-type offenses is the taking of money or property, but there is no force or threat of force against the victims. The US average is 3.

if one took the time to wade into crime stastics on every decent-sized city, one would probably be paralyized by unnecessary fear. these stats are so misleading. look at nashville tn, memphis, dallas, houston, etc. remember, the folk who put out these pronouncements have their own agendas and motives. crime, unfortunately, seeks out opportunity in every community. victimization can be minimizes: not totally eliminated. cities, by and large, have same or similar characteristics. all of them have people---and that is where crime begins.

Can anyone weigh in on how much to expect to pay for private school. My oldest will not start K-5 for another 2 years, but I would like to know what to expect.

Our kids went to St. Rose Academy, run by the Dominican sisters. It's been four years, but our tuition was around $400 per child per month. St. Francis Xavier is close to that. However, to be honest, we found that Mountain Brook schools (public) were better and far more satisfying.

i agree w/ the statement concerning the mountain brook schools district. i have friends who teach in the elementary and middle school areas. they love the system. they were employed by the b'ham school board and one was employed by jefferson christian, a church of christ school. mountain brook pays higher salaries, and it is thought they get a large number of top notch public school teachers. most of the teachers that i know in b'ham have applied for the MB system, on one or more occasions. it is a good system worth exploring. good luck

I have some friends who live on that street. Not a bad area, very convenient to lots of things, but there's a roaming door-to-door mooch-artist or two who use aggressive friendliness and charisma powers to extract favors and rides "down the street" to Titusville from prospective suckas, so watch out for that. Relatively lively area and a good place for porch-parties, though.

Titusville? Sure you're in the right forum?
This is the Alabama forum...not Florida.
