Hello,
I am 21 years old and am thinking about moving to Birmingham ( I currently live in Huntsville). I am graduating in a few months with a nursing degree and am interested in the RN internships offered at UAB's Hospital. I was wanting to know how Birmingham is regarding crime, housing, cost of living, etc. and good areas to live that are safe and reasonable for someone my age. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Default If you don't have school-aged kids

and you're working around UAB, you might want to start out with an apartment in Southside... relatively low crime, diverse area, nightlife, lots of college kids, etc. Also lots of affordable apartments in nice areas of Homewood, which is a close-in suburb with low crime and a short (2-5 minute) drive to UAB. Other affordable apartments in decent areas close to UAB would be around Highland Avenue and Forest Park/South Avondale in the city limits, but you might want a house so that would be a different story.

definitely look at the apartments and condos on southside. 1 br condos range from 90k up to nearly 200k.

bristol southside is probably the biggest and newest development that is reasonably priced. 1 bedrooms there run from about 150k to 180k, and several are available to rent for about 1000/month (expensive, but the location can't be beat, especially if you will be doing anything at uab).

Depending on many things I would think there's more places for you to move to than Birmingham. Racial considerations, environment, city life v.s. country life, small town v.s. big city. UAB does indeed have alot to offer but then the lifestyle, relaxation, and freedom of a slower paced smaller city would be more appealing to me. Jasper, Cullman, lots of other places to go with smaller hospitals and doctors offices... rural communities where the pace is a bit slower and the cost of living is much cheaper.

Hi Sweethart,
My son is 24 and lives in a 1-bedroom apartment on Southside (a quick walk to BellBottoms!). He is fairly pleased with his apartment and pays the lowest rent he could find, but it's still about $450 a month. He said he feels fairly safe as long as he takes the usual precautions that you would anywhere. There are a number of students and young professionals that live in this area. He really likes Birmingham and is impressed with the number of things to do on weekends. It's a little livelier than Huntsville but not as intimidating as Atlanta. Good luck!
