I moved here from out of state, so i can say i understand...

most neighborhoods in the "populous" areas are quite diverse, you will be fine... if you get to the country, they will be less inclined to accept you, but this was also true for me, just coming from LA.

dont let visions of the past put this city in a negative light, frankly those ideas are long gone and are no more an issue than in Penn, or Ca. its all the same, i've lived in 10 states i know..

if you dont have kids, South side is fine, if your planning, then consider Mountain brook or vestavia on the high ends, and hoover in the median for housing costs. there are in fact a LARGE number of ex-pats and diverse backgrounds in "Liberty Park" vestavia and the schools are awesome.

Good luck, keep an open mind, people here are the nicest you'll ever meet.

I don't know what you're used to, but by my opinion there are no Asian Indian community areas. I'd gather Vestavia Hills is your best bet to settle at a good K-12 school system that has somewhat of an East and South Asian population.
There are some South Asian people in Southside Birmingham right next to UAB, but once you get to Kindergarten you likely would be unhappy with the public schools. There is another thread here about daycare as well.

For me, the commute from UAB to those areas would be a bit much. 280 is well-known for being horrible at rush hour. 65 is another major highway that has a rush hour as well.

Default 280 traffic

How long do you estimate it would take to UAB from kenley way during rush traffic hours. I used google map and it shows 21 minutes drive time, BUT that is without the traffic included.

Default Moving to Alabama

Hi all,
Am going to be moving to Alabama from Dallas/Fort Worth TX in June 2011. I am going to be working in UA Tuscaloosa, but am looking for apartments in either Tuscaloosa or Birmingham. I am leaning towards B'ham though. I dont mind the hour long drive. I am a single guy who likes to work hard during the week and party/enjoy hard during the weekends. Please let me know which areas would be well suited. (Asian/Indian here).

Reviving this old thread as it is relevant to my situation. We are a family of 4 with 2 daughters 3 & 6 yo. We are at present living in Bay Area, CA but are considering moving to Texas or Alabama. My elder daughter is autistic and as a result my wife cannot work as she needs more care and attention. Considering the high cost of living and faster lifestyle in places like NYC and CA where we have mostly been living, we have decided to leave CA.
Mountain Brook, AL is one of the places somebody recommended us. But we are worried that since we are not originally from the US, and are already in our late thirties so if it makes sense to move to areas where there are not many immigrants.
Looking for some guidance here, any pointers would be super helpful.

Does someone know how are public schools in Birmingham or Mountain Brook area, from the perspective of inclusive education. My 6 yo daughter is autistic and we are considering moving there, but have some concerns around bullying in school. Any suggestions would be very helpful

Those two systems are probably the most opposite end of the spectrum as you can get for this area as far as quality is concerned. Is there not a resource your local support system can help you use to determine which system has the training and ability to best support your family needs?
