See, I don't agree with the recommendations regarding Hoover. Hoover is a great place, but it's pretty much a family-driven suburb. Meanwhile, AllPro seems like a guy who enjoys going to a nightclub with friends, seeing live music, and being around an active singles scene. Right?

If that's the case, I would say that Southside, particularly that area from Five Points South all the way over to Crestwood is a good area. It's an easy drive to and from Samford (against traffic both ways, btw), there are lots of single people, you're right in the middle of the entertainment district, and there are plenty of apartments and condos. It's really a great part of town to live in. My wife and I moved here from Chicago 15 years ago, and really grew to love that part of town.

Birmingham's Southside would be an excellent choice for BURP's (Black Urban Professionals) of both genders.

I suggest to both of you who are moving in from DC and PHilly respectively that you look hard at Forest Park. Magificent old homes is a good neighborhood with low crime....if you can afford Homewood, it is a fun suburb, located immediately over the mountain from downtown and contiguous to the city. From Homewood to 5 Points South district and Lakeview district would be a horrible 5-7 commute! The village of Homewood itself is fun and has good variety.

If you like to stay out late, Birmingham is one of the few cities in the nation (such as Las Vegas and New Orleans) that has No Closing Law, meaning bars can be open 7X24 with the exception of 3AM - 12PM on Sunday.

Birmingham: Nightlife - TripAdvisor

Birmingham's Southside is vibrant....there is much to do with good clubs, bars and restaurants. Our metro area is 30% black and you will feel very much at home and accepted here.

Default Stay where you are

I would suggest you stay where you are. This is a nice place to be FROM (away from). Although it was a nice place to live in the '50's and '60's, things are so unreal now, it is just not enough room for any more carpet baggers. No offence intended. After the passing of the last great governors(Wallace), no longer is it the "MAGIC" city it used to be. Thank you for your interest in the South.

You said in an other post that you moved to NC in 62. Is it possible you could be out of touch of day to day life here?

What alternative universe do you live in? Birmingham's much better as a place to live now. And George Wallace was a God awful governor.

You are right, as I have moved back and forth 3 times. I still prefer my home state of Al. Work brought me to NC and I have had to stay here for awhile the last time.
Thanks

I certainly hope things have changed since the 50s-60s!! AL is still fighting against the perception from then that only racist and dumb rednecks live here as it is. FWIW, I was born and raised in AL during that time period and I remember them well. I prefer the AL of today, where everyone is welcomed.

To the OP..B'ham area is growing as is most of AL. The city is slowly going through gentrification. Listen to the good folks who know the area now, they won't steer you wrong.
