So I have been thinking of learning to Scuba dive and was wondering if there were any places worth diving around B'ham that would save me a >2 hour drive.

The Dive Site is where I learned. They are PADI instructors.

I guess my question is if I were to learn to dive, would there be interesting places to dive in around the area?

I would think people are getting their license so that they can dive other places

There are a couple of places around town. I think one's called Blue Water. The Dive Site will have that info, though

Is it just me, or is this like asking where is there to ski in Arizona?

Not really, because you have to have a place to practice. I'm PADI certified, and a lot of the local divers go to local places because a drive to the coast is such a pain in the ass. I sail, too, but I have to content myself with a boat on the lake rather than one on the ocean. Because I can get to the lake in 60 minutes, while the ocean is four hours.

It just seems weird... like people can never be satisfied with activities naturally available to them. People always have to do everything wherever they live. They want to golf in the desert, ski where it barely snows, rock climb where its flat. I'm totally including myself in this expectation, too.
Also, I'm not sure I'd call tanks interesting. I guess if there's nothing else and you want to keep it up. If I planned on living in B'ham for the rest of my life I'm not sure I'd keep it up, though.

A good point. But you never know what's going to interest you. After all, I got into sailing 17 years ago, and it's stuck with me.
