I've looked for info on the schools in the area and didn't find quite what I was looking for so here goes. Do schools in Alabama use the standardized testing as their means of proving how good schools are? Are the state mandated tests the most important part of the school year like in certain states that shall remain nameless (Texas)? Where we are living now, again to remain nameless (Texas), a certain state mandated standardized test is all the schools care about and its all the teachers care to teach is what will be on that test. We are really thinking twice about sending our kids into this crazy school system that seems to mainly teach to the test. Just wondering if things are different in Bama? Thank you guys for all your help!

I moved from Birmingham to San Antonio just over 2 years ago. The school systems that I am familiar with in Alabama all use the Stanford 10 achievement test starting in 3rd grade. There are also state specific exams given in certain grades to test reading and math. Here is a link to a site that more thoroughly answers your question.

I share your frustration over the TAKS tests in Texas. I was really irritated that I had no way to compare the schools objectively. It's ridiculous that they aren't taking nationally normed tests. We homeschool, but it is still important to me to live in a good school district-- I'm not sure how long I will continue to homeschool.
