Good news. You will be able to find all kinds of properties under $300,000 within an hour's drive of downtown. I would recommend Birmingham Real Estate - Birmingham Homes - Relocation for a pretty good search engine.

Schools south of town and in Trussville are generally very good. I would look at various school rating systems.

As far as the interracial dating thing goes, I don't have a clue. I see a good number of interracial couples about, so I think attitudes have changed significantly over the years.

The gay scene, from what I understand, is fairly active. However, like most cities, it is pretty much concentrated in the Southside area of Birmingham. With a degree in dentistry, he almost certainly should find something, whether in UAB or in the zillion practices around town.

If you go to Real Estate, Homes for Sale, Luxury Homes and Commercial Real Estate | Keller Williams Realty you should find what your looking for.

For $300,000, you can find a nice home with acreage, that would be about 30 to 40 min drive to downtown Birmingham. Dont count on the miles away from downtown however, as the drive time will greatly depend on where and what roads and/or interstate you take to get there, as well as time of day.

Birmingham has a active gay scene and is very open with interracial dating and marriages. This is not the Birmingham of the 60s.

The McCalla area has homes like what you are looking for with a few new dentistry businesses opening up and is a very easy commute to the downtown area.

If you send me a private message, Ill dig up the names and address for the dentistry businesses that are opening up soon, so your cousin can send them a resume' and perhaps have a job all lined up for him once you get here.

Good luck with your up coming move!
