Hi, I'm from the Atlanta area and will be moving to Birmingham for a job in early June. Just found out about this yesterday, so I have to move fast. I'm looking to rent a room in a house or maybe split an apartment so I can save up some money, probably for about six months. I'm just wondering what are some nice areas in the Birmingham metro area, suburbs and what not? I'll be commuting to the city and I don't want to drive any more than 15 miles each way. So I can know where to look and where to maybe stay away from, . I don't want to spend any more than $500 a month, and I'd like the utilities to be included. I'm 25, male, I DON'T like a lot of noise at nights during the week, the weekends I'm pretty flexible. Aside from that, the regulars: No drugs and no crazies. Can anybody suggest some nice areas that I should check out?

Thanks!

Sure thing. Aside from avoiding drugs or crazies, what are your interests?

Interests...lots so I'll just include all. Music, dining, chilling/hanging out (not that I know anybody in Birmingham). Sports (basketball mostly, some football - I hear Alabama is a football state), travel (though it'll probably be a while), pretty much having fun but keeping it 21+ at all times. I guess you could say I'm a pretty laid back guy.

In that case, I'd say Southside, particularly in the Highland Avenue area. Lots of nightclubs and restaurants, but still pretty quiet.

Can you find a apartment for $500 (including the utilities) on the Southside?

You'd be hard pressed. $600-$700 is more likely to me.

Great, I'll check that out. I should say I do like to club occasionally, but I don't like to LIVE near them. It's kind of like my place in Atlanta, I'm at least 30-40 minutes from any club and I don't really mind the commute. Is there anything you'd suggest a little more outside the city?

Sorry to keep asking stuff, just I'm trying to get an idea. And maybe with my time limit and budget I'm being a bit too picky. Let's narrow it down to any quiet suburban area where I might be able to find the room and utilities for $500. Thanks again.

Go to AL.com for your search. But I think $500 is too little.

The son rented a one-bedroom apartment in Southside that was very quiet, but he paid $550 for it and he got a steal. But if you're open to sharing, you might find something cheaper (at least your share would be cheaper). You need to look at the lay of the land - his and a good many other apartments were on the mountain above the entertainment area, so it was very quiet.

OTOH, daughter-in-law's apartment was in one of the mega-plexes on Valley Avenue, and it was neither quiet nor safe. They are now in a nice but small 2-bedroom in Vestavia Hills.
