We're going to Huntsville for the weekend (space museum) , and wondering if we should stay the night and go on to see Birmingham, or just head back home. This is the first time we will be in Alabama and frankly dont know much about the place. Is Birmingham a tourist town or can we just skip it altogether ? Any major attractions , things to do that might be worth the one night stay ? Is it any different from Huntsville as a town/city ? We dont mind driving around just to get a feel of the place if it is different from what we have seen Also, any other places nearby that might be worth a visit ?

There are things to do here, but it's not built for tourism. It's bigger than Huntsville by a factor of 3x, with nicer restaurants and better hotels. I would offer that Ross Bridge would be great, especially if you like golf. The Barber Motorcycle Museum is world class, the Civil Rights Museum is a must-see, there's a pretty good art museum, Vulcan, some good shopping, etc.

I agree with CPG's suggestions. Also, Rickwood Field is the oldest existing baseball park in the U.S. There's American Village in Montevallo, which is sort of a Colonial-Williamsburg-in-Training. The historic homes in the Redmont area on Red Mountain are beautiful. I find that folks from out of the state don't realize we have such places!

Where are you coming from? I lived in Bham for 8 years or so, a long time back, and really liked it. But it is a long, long drive from Huntsville and there doesn't seem to be those touristy things to do. I recommend getting some good smoked pork barbecue, but you can get that all over Alabama.
