E90s without forced induction (325i, 328i) are among the most reliable BMWs you can buy. Biggest weaknesses for them are cooling system(waterpump/thermostat), window regulators, and suspension(control arm bearings). Maintenance can be more expensive(oil changes can be $100, tires wear fast, parts are anywhere from 15-30% more expensive than japanese cars), but with just a little TLC you can get into the 100k+ range with little difficulty. Just budget $1000/yr for potential repairs(if needed).

Take it to a BMW dealership and have them run a VIN report. It will show the service history of the car and whether the previous owner kept up with the maintenance. If you want to keep it, I would ignore the time/mileage based service lights and change the oil every 5000 miles.

I am on my 5th BMW and have had zero problems with any of them.

With all the electrical components these days, it's only a matter of time. Even a dying battery will pop up a myriad of false positives.

This is a resurrected thread, but if anyone is looking for a good maintenance schedule based on best practices rather than revenue maximization for BMWNA, google "Mike Miller's Old School Maintenance Schedule". Very knowledgeable guy on these cars.

I have two BMWs: an '01 525 and a '07 530i. The only problems I've really had with them have been cooling issues and worn suspension components on the '01 and the electric water pump on the '07. Keep up on the maintenance and they can be good cars. The naturally aspirated I6s are great motors and pretty reliable.

I was kinda thinking about getting a used X5 and looked up some DIY repairs on youtube.
No wonder they cost an arm and a leg to maintain. I am crossing X5 off my list.

Yep. I just picked up a 2010 535xi with 41K miles on Monday.
