At the repair shop, the guy ahead of me was driving a BMW 318Ti. It's overall shape looked like the early two door hatchback Kia Rio except it was better built, RWD, and pretty quick. Never saw one before. Looked very cramp inside for back passengers.

The rear passengers are no more cramped in it than in any other 3 series of the same year. They are stubbier behind the seats, but the hatch is quite useful.

These days a lot of them have been converted to M spec, as they are fun little cars that are lighter and better balanced than the typical 3 series (which is no sluch in that department itself).

I like them but they are harder to come by these days.

I remember the 318ti Compact AC Schnitzer Edition. A truly fantastic car.

I had one and found the rear suspension changes to accommodate the flat cargo area floor really compromised the handling... not as sure as a regular 3-series and allowed the lifting of one rear wheel in very hard cornering.

The packaging to allow cargo, access, and seating is excellent resulting in a very versatile package.

My experience was it was not terribly reliable with little things needing fixes, often under warranty but expensive when not.

I always preferred the traditional E36 coupe over the hatch which I thought had awkward proportions in comparison.
