Hey Folks - looking for input on buying an automatic Mini (old injuries from Nam and aging make my 5 speed Mustang GT not viable anymore). My concern is do I need to buy the S or is the base workable in auto configuration? Many thanks for your input.
The new auto gearbox in the Mini is getting rave reviews from owners. Check out the forums at "North American Motoring" (just google it). The site is the source for Mini information.
Thanks for your service. IMHO, Get the MCS. You won't regret it. It will handle much better than your current car, and probably be just as quick.
I have had my MINI for 3 years, its a base model, not S. It is a 5 speed but honestly, if you are just looking for a fun car to get around town the base MINI should do you fine auto or standard.
My model year was the last of the supercharged S prior to going to turbo, but I also believe it is still true that the base MINI gets a little better gas mileage than the S as well.
Both MINI Coopers will have great handling and braking. But the S will have a little extra power. I currently have a Toyota Yaris, which has less horse power than the Base MINI, and it can keep up with traffic just fine. So, you probably don't need the S, but if you want it get it.
If you are going to get an Auto I would just go with a base. I used to have a 2007 Cooper base 6-speed and it was awesome for speed and accleration but when the local dealer let me drive a Cooper S for a day I loved but the MPG is in the 20s.
I would definitely drive them both and see what you think yourself. Offhand I would think the S would be more what a 5-L Mustang guy would want, but you can probably drive both versions before buying.
