Here's something unexpected. Mini USA has announced it's challenging Porsche to a formal race, where the go-kart-like Cooper S will take on the infamous 911 Carrera S. This may seem like a far stretch, seeing as how the Cooper is down on power by over 200 horses, but Mini is confident that its more nimble, lighter hatch can out-maneuver the big 911 on the track.

That Cooper is gonna have to really outcorner the Porsche to make up for the way the Porsche will eat it up on the straights.
...and I own a MINI Cooper S too.

They did a test on Top Gear (purely scientific, of course) wherein a Porsche with about 100 less HP spanked some other cars because of how well it handles and how well it utilized every available HP.
The Cooper does that exceptionally well.

It's more than likely just a big Marketing gimmick, Mini cannot seriously believe they have a snowballs chance in Hell of beating a Porsche 911! Either way it'd be a win-win for Mini whether Porsche accepts or declines. If they decline, Mini will say they're scared or something to that effect. If they accept and when Porsche wins, Mini will said they displayed heart on the racetrack and it'll likely be something in future commercials.
Mini has no chance of winning, any competent person with a small knowledge about vehicles and physics will tell you the same.

Road Atlanta has one LONG back straight and another pretty long straight.
Either MINI is just using this as a marketing ploy OR they really are serious and have probably done some laps with both cars and already know they can win.
I assume they are thinking totally showroom stock cars too.

The Porsche would destroy the Mini on anything with long straights.

Viewing a satellite image seems to show a little autocross-type course in the infield of Road Atlanta on the southern end of the track. The Mini stands a good chance there. If they run an actual road course... forget it.

Sure enough, Mini tried to stack the deck by confining the race to the infield autocross course -- and still got their faces kicked in. |
