Hello again,
I have another outdoorsey question. I see that Boise has many nearby hiking trails, and it looks like a great place to live for outdoor enthusiasts, but I haven't seen any info on trails that allow dogs to be off leash. Do any exist?

The one problem with all of the trails around Boise is that they have been loved to death by dog owners. I own three dogs and I make sure that I keep my dogs on the leash and pick up after them. The Boise Police will issue tickets to unsecured dogs and they will not give out warnings.

That being said, there are some trails and parks that you will find that you can let your dogs loose and it is legal or there is no enforcement. Boise Police patrol the busiest parts of the foothills trails like Hulls Gulch, Camelsback, Military Reserve and the downtown parks along the river. But if I go to my neighborhood park in west Boise I never worry about taking my dog off the leash for a little bit to play catch.

There's big controversy about dog-crap in the foothills. Comes up about every 4 months or so.

You'll get a ticket in some of the more popular areas if your dog is off leash. My boss has got about 3 in the past year. You'll also get some glares and people whining about it.

The military reserve is a bit better, but the general rule is that anywhere that you can expect to see hikers or bikers, just don't do it.

The parks aren't as strict, I find. I always have my dog off leash in the parks and in the river (just not the greenbelt). Just make sure you clean up their shizz.

My understanding from several people with dogs in the Foothils, is that the Boise police are bullies. There are far more important issues for the BPD to focus on like people texting and talking on their cell phones while driving and not wasting tax payer money patrolling trails looking for dog owners to hassle.

Man, how long have you been in Boise? The police here are bullies in EVERY situation. I'm sure you heard the punchline to whenever someone says they got pulled over for speediing: "you're just lucky they didn't shoot you."

We kid around about Boise police but I know for a fact they're far to aggressive for seemingly innocuous situations. It's like they're looking to escalate the situation and bully people into bigger tickets/charges. I know of many people that got ticketed for jaywalking downtown, which prompted an argument, which prompted "resisting arrest," which prompted citations for witness who then argue and complain.

It's pathetic.

(Full disclosure: I've never been involved with a situation with a police officer, so I have no sour grapes in this discussion)

I was trying to not be too blunt about the police in case someone in the police station reads this thread and gets offended and takes it out on someone I do think there are way tooooooooo many police in this city. Just drive down State Street any time of the day and they are everywhere they shouldn't be but nowhere they should be.
