So I am currently living in San Jose, CA. but I run an online business so I would like to relocate to Portland or Boise. I've only been to Boise once like 5 years ago and thought it was really nice, but don't have any living experience there. I am 28 years old and me and my wife are planning on having two kids in the next two years. I know of the North end and the bench, but what are some other nice areas that aren't so well known? Are there any in Nampa or Meridian? Is Garden City a good place to look? I would like to live near a downtown area if its possible. I don't know if these other cities even have a downtown. I'm planning on visiting in April.

All of them have a downtown but if the downtown area in Boise is what you like, then Nampa and Meridian will fall short. If you have the funds (now is a great time to buy a house) then I would recommend either the north or the warm springs/foothills east area. The other advantage to doing this is that it puts you right in the heart of the best public schools in the Boise area.

if you're renting an apartment there is a great site called apartmentratings.com that I have found very helpful. Also I use the website spotcrime.com to look into crime in the area Im looking at.

You mentioned Garden City. The Waterfront District is buzzing with building activity again after hitting a lull during the economic downturn. It's a cute area very close to downtown. The other day I went through a nice, brand new 3 bed/2 bath home with around 1600 square feet on a single level that was priced at $199,900. Yards are small but it's across the street from Boise Greenbelt access and across the Boise River from the new Esther Simplot Whitewater Park.

In SE Boise there are also a couple of nice new construction projects. Also, lots of great neighborhoods with existing homes throughout the Boise core. For me, personally, I'd stay within a 3-4 mile radius of downtown Boise. The best of what our community has to offer will be nearby--great downtown, foothills hiking, Boise river, Greenbelt walking/biking path, great schools, etc.

If you did choose Meridian, focus on north Meridian in the Rocky Mountain High area. When I meet people from Meridian with a strong sense of community and neighborhood pride, this is the area they seem to live.

Good luck to you with your move!!
