What does Boise need (that seems to be missing) that other cities our size have?

Well it needs many things (IMO) but compared to other cities of a similar size... I think we pretty much have it all.

Salt Lake City seems to have a lot more of the shopping, dining, freeway system, theme parks, public transportation, etc - but even though the city itself is a similar size, the metro is quite a bit larger. I'd say for a metro and city our size we have it pretty good.

A lot of cities/metros as small as Boise don't even have an airport with major airlines.

Boise needs jobs. Unfortunately I may be heading out of here if I can't get something lined up here pretty soon. Talked to the folks down at the Idaho Dept of Labor and they tell me to prepare for a 9-18 month job search for anything that pays more than $10 an hour. Been looking since March and have only had a handful of interviews and no offers or second interviews.

Griping aside, was going to say the only thing that Boise really needs is a Chipotle, but we just got one within the past year. Other than that Boise has more than most towns our size.

First and foremost:

1. A sustainable economy. Not an economy built on tech bubbles or real estate.

2. Long term comprehensive planning and vision. The entire valley needs this, not just Boise or Ada County. In their drive to attract people and business we'll give up our quality of life. It has happened in every other city in every other region, and it's foolish to think Boise would be different. Our current comp plans are nice, but they have no teeth.

3. More attractive public transportation network. Our buses are fine; no one wants to ride them, however.

4. Less people and less big box/chain/strip mall commercial development.

I agree with ILI.EB that we have it good considering our city/metro size. On the flip side though I never wish we had what SLC may have that we don't have because whenever I leave that city I am always so relieved to get back to Boise, and many people including myself feel Boise has it so much better than SLC considering our lively downtown. They just have more cookie cutter sprawl and boring malls and crazed drivers

Back to the topic, Boise needs less NIMBYS and a good dim sum restaurant.

A good Jewish deli with matzo ball soup. I also miss Smart & Final.

NIMBY's keep Boise from becoming SLC (or Phoenix, or Portland, or Seattle, or Spokane, or any city in California....).

You can't have it both ways.
