Can anyone tell me what Mountain Home, ID is like? Is grocery shopping/gas stations close-by? What's the weather like, etc. My husband and I are visiting the Boise area in May and will be scoping out potential areas to relocate to once he retires.

Thanks!

Military town, isolated, flat and somewhat boring. You have Walmart there and fast food chains. Housing is older but some new developments going up. People tend to be very transient there and atmosphere is less friendly than Boise area. Not to sound like a downer, just what I have noticed while being there a few times. Doesn't feel as "safe" as other parts of Idaho to me for some reason.

Thanks for the reply. We've been checking out places online but realize a picture only gives one part of the story. Appreciate the info.

Picture this...a large flat piece of high desert...slap a Walmart on it and at the other end some 12 miles away put an Air Force base there. In between are your standard issue homes of all types from trailers to modest new construction...a subway, a bar, a car lot or two. There you have it...Mtn Home. Civilization exists 45 minutes up 84 and into Boise. Easy drive when there is no whipping wind or snow. Enjoy : )

The attractive name sounds good, but the town doesn't match it's name. I agree with all the above comments.

If you like fishing, you'd be in heaven in Mountain Home. One of my favorite places to fish is practically a stone's throw away. I'm thinking of moving there just so I don't have to make the 100 mile round trip from Boise.

Hmmmmmmm.....after reading the comments, Mountain Home has been moved pretty far down the"potential area to relocate to" list. Reminds me too much of the desolate areas where I used to live in Arizona, except the car lots would be replaced with cotton fields. No thanks, not again! Appreciate the info....Thanks!

All I know is my daughter and her Air Force husband would love to put in for it. That way we would be closer to them from Boise! It's not that far of a drive for us who are retired military also.

I was curious what was in Mountain Home that made it come up on your list to start with? I don't think of it as a destination retirement spot.

There are great bedroom communities around Boise that would typically jump way higher on my list. I was surprised to learn how many people move to Boise to retire but the people are friendly, cost of living is pretty affordable, lots to do, and I can hop on a plane and be about anywhere when I need my big city fix.

We've been looking at places online with at least an acre and no close neighbors, room for a shop or one already on the property. Live in a "bedroom community" near Sacramento now and can't wait to have a place with some space and privacy. Mountain Home seemed to have some of that.
