Thanks for all the responses. As a retiree I realize that my medical needs will rise and I want to make smart decisions now, although I realize that there will probably be a lot of changes coming with the government's health care law.
The Treasure Valley isn't rural and we have plenty of medical options to choose from here. I am also a retiree but unfortunately with many medical issues and I am receiving excellent care. And I previously went to the Rochester Mayo Clinic all the time for my medical issues.
I would disagree with truckingbronco and benchfan, particularly when it comes to specialists, even Boise is a little shorthanded in some departments. Some of them have even been leaving for greener pastures recently with how badly the state has been managing medicaid, etc. (there are a lot of people getting assistance in this state), although from what I hear things may be turning around in that department. Of the ones that are here, there are some decent doctors, but you might have a hard time getting into the good ones. I would highly suggest St. Lukes over St. Als for most fields (there are some exceptions of course). In my personal opinion, a lot of Idahoans don't see doctors much at all (even when they need to), and often those that do, settle.
