I am buying a new home and want to make sure a buy a house that faces the right direction for the winter. Should the front of the house face north, south, east or west to get the most snow melt in the front if the house? Thanks!
West facing (east backyard) is generally the most sought after because it gives you a nice cool back deck/patio in the summer.
As far as snow-melt in the front goes, you'll do best with west or south facing. East facing would next and north facing would be the worst (again, for snowmelt purposes).
You can get stretches of winter in Boise where the snow won't melt regardless of sun exposure, so it's smart to shovel when the snow is still fresh and then stay on it as additional snow piles up.
My house faces due south. When it snows, my sidewalk/driveway/front yard melt within a day or two, while my neighbors across the street still have snow on their driveway/sidewalk for several more days. To me, that is a big advantage. My back patio is covered, so the sun doesn't bother me in the evening.
Yeah, in my culdesac, the houses that face North always have to go out and use snow melt on the ice in their driveways because they neglect to shovel. The rest of us, who face east or west, all have clear driveways whether we shovel or not. If I shovel in the morning after a snowfall, my driveway is usually dry by noon (assuming it isn't still snowing)
Depends on tree cover. Lots of trees makes a south or west facing yard nice because you get shade in the summer and great light/passive solar in the winter. If you are in a new subdivision with no mature trees, a north or east facing back yard is a must. I personally would prefer east facing so you get nice morning light and evening shade. You'll enjoy the benefits of a west/south exposure as mentioned above.
