In our two year long research into dropping everything and moving to an unknown area 2200 miles from everything we have ever known, we ran across a video that was the main thing that solidified our decision. There is a DVD you can buy on Amazon that is called "Idaho: The Movie". It's about $15 and it is worth 10X that much. It was written and narrated by Tim Woodward who is possibly the foremost authority and head cheerleader of Idaho. Buy that movie.
During the year long process of trying to sell our farm to get here, this was our go to motivator. It's amazing and we have watched it at least 50 times.
The most affordable place in Idaho for nice large homes on some acreage is in Idaho Falls....that is it...imo. Long winters I hear though.....Boise has nice homes even new ones for cheap, but the lots are .14, .17, .23...just tiny tiny lots...no can do....
The Costco's in Idaho are selling that DVD. Think it came in a two-pack with Tom Skerritt's fishing video. I'm betting there will be a lot of copies under the tree tomorrow morning.
We moved to Idaho Aug 13 from New England and sent that movie to my husband's parents for Christmas. We have already found many beautiful places to explore here. As far as the winters...everyone keeps telling me how "harsh" the winters are here, but compared to New England they are nothing unless you live in the higher elevations. We're in the foothills and even here it's been nothing to worry about. No more 24" of heavy wet snow falling in 8 hours or bone-chilling humid cold. The wind can get a little crazy but it ends soon enough.

I need to post a correction to my previous above. The two-pack sold by Costco stores in Idaho includes "Idaho: The Movie" and "Wildlife of the West". "The Rocky Mountain Fly Highway" fishing video was in the same display, but a separate purchase.
"Idaho: The Movie" is a 47-minute video with a 5-minute 'behind the scenes' bonus video. "Wildlife of the West" is a 35-minute video and the disc has a one-minute bonus video. (These times are based on Handbrake, rounded to the nearest minute.) The "Fly Highway" video is 46-minutes long, based on the dust jacket.
