Hi everyone.

Born/raised in California, lived here for past 39 years.

I own a very small internet company. Am considering Boise.

I guess this is a more general question....but do you think I will like it?

I am not your typical Californian. I'm conservative and I dislike buildings and concrete. I love open spaces and nature. I'm ok with snow, I dislike massive heat.

Single and looking for long term girlfriend.

Do most Californians like Boise after they adjust?

Am worried that even though I do not like California....I have certain cultural things that would not mesh well with Idahoians. Whatever it may be....from speech to mannerisms/etc.

Why are you considering Boise?

I get the sense from so many that they are looking at Boise because it's the next big "thing," which is a typical Californian thing to want. But they really don't have much of a clue as to why they want it.

So... why do you want to move here? What do you know about it?

Know this:

We're a city, like other cities, with a lot of people, concrete, buildings, and all that comes with it. That's not to say that's good or bad, but we're not different than anywhere else in that respect. We get really hot - over 90 and often into the 100's for over a month, often two (July/August). We get cold and gloomy, often for over a month or two, and often at or near zero degrees, and up to two weeks without really ever seeing the sun. It's a family city, so for older singles it might be hard to meet people (see the other threads on this). Wages here are really low, among the worst in the nation for state, but Boise is a bit better.

So there are some of the negatives. Of course there are many positives, too.

I'm considering Boise because housing is affordable, and I realize I'm going to get flamed for this....but I'm tired of the illegal alien problem we have here in California. From lurking in the Boise forum, I realize you guys have the same issues there as well....just probably not as bad.

My biggest concern is: "job market" (I own my own small internet company...but would like a safety net wherein I could plausibly get a full time job as a "Digital Marketing Manager" if SHTF)

My other concern is that I read Boise is "high desert"? In California, "high desert" to me is Barstow, California in terms of landscape and scenery...a miserable hot hell-hole. Are there a lot of trees and greenery in Boise?

I'm just looking to escape this California. I didn't sign up for this. I'm not trying to come there and change Boise into anything that "reminds me of home". I just want to live and blend in with the rest of the townsfolk. I like trees and green grass and big backyards and a "friendly" type of environment that is the polar opposite of California.

I take it most people there hate Californians....and I honestly do not blame them one bit.

This has been a 5 year decision in the making. I have been all over the country/world and finally realized it's not me, it's California. Anywhere in the Midwest/South that I go, I get along with people extremely well and it's extremely easy for me to make friends.

I'm not a "racist"
I don't belong to the KKK/etc
I don't hate anyone.

I just want to live in an area with my own kind. Tired of liberals, tired of "liberal white guilt". Tired of getting dirty looks on an almost weekly basis from them. Just tired of it.

I realize whenever people hear me speak like that, the conditioning they have been indoctrinated with in their lifetimes makes them think "you're a racist!!!". But there is no other way to say it.

I know towns like this exist because I have family in an affluent suburb of Denver and that area is just amazing. Colorado isn't for me due to high elevation...and I don't get along with certain family members.

I'm not trolling here, just speaking my mind.

You will probably fit in well in ID. The biggest flames on this blog come from Idahoians who land on someone, just moved here, from CA, wondering why it isn't CA.

We chose ID to escape the rampant CA leftist bent and government intrusion into everything in your life, but mainly high taxes and gun control. After 10 years in OR, saw Californians ruin eastern OR to where OR is just CA, not so light. ID is a state that would be on the side of a free America, if it comes to the SHTF. A joke here is that if you move to ID and don't have a gun, we'll have to issue you one.

My impression is that as one moves north in ID, it becomes more politically conservative, but that is just my impression. Boise IMO is a squishy Jelly donut (I call it), with the libs being predominantly in central-north Boise (the Jelly) and we conservatives being on the outer ring (the donut). But as you may have read, the Repubs control all major state offices and dominate the legislature. Ok with me, but they are too liberal for me in some things.

You will get what you put out as ID is a pretty much live and let live, unless you start leaning on someone. BTW, I am not of the predominant ID ethnic persuasion and do miss good ethnic foods in Boise, but have had no problems at all here. I am probably even more right of 99% of most natives here.

Hope this helps.

As far as deserts, Barstow is more Sonoran desert (Yuccas, Joshua trees, some cacti), but ID is a high desert of sage and rabbitbrush, but with lots of mountains and forest as one moves north.

Yes. I've heard Boise referred to as having a garden like setting which is agreeable. We have a lot of green grass and flowing water and an impressive urban canopy of blooming trees in season. This little city is an oasis in the high desert and there is fertile farmland west of city limits to the Oregon state line.

I'm having $800 stolen from me to pay my "California corporation" LLC annual fee. I'd rather keep that money out of the hands of comrade Jerry Brown and his merry band of socialists.

Heya thanks. I have many "ethnic" friends where I live here in California and they same the same thing about the illegals....and the liberals.

Can I take you up on your offer of a free gun? I have several already, but I'm still probably dangerously low compared to most Boise people. I heard you can buy silencers and even get your hands on a fully auto weapon....apparently with Fed approval but since I don't have a criminal record/drugs/mental issues, I don't see why I can't.

But yeah I'm not looking to change anything and I would be a hippocrate if I didn't immediately begin to try to assimilate with the locals. I don't have a lot of money either so it's not as if I'm coming in with a dump truck full of money. Going to have to rent.

I also like Boise because what "terrorist" (or false-flag federal government operator) is going to attack Boise? Nobody. Because it's in the middle of nowhere. So from that perspective, I would feel really safe living in Boise.

So Boise is definitely green? Is it hard to grow flowers and bushes and trees in your backyard?

Are the surrounding hills in the Boise area green? Like if I'm driving down the main street....I'm sure I would be able to see hills in the distance?

I just don't want to be reminded I'm in a desert...but I looked on Google maps and I think your guys definition of "high desert" is a bit different from mine...and that's a good thing.

Boise is green spring through fall and in some cases grass will stay green all year depending on the year. If you know how to garden it is easy to grown foilage in your backyard if it doesn't already have it. It seems like there are more greenhouses and tree nurseries here than you can shake a tree branch at.

The surrounding hills are green during spring and early summer, but are dry and brownish the rest of the year with evergreen forests fringing the tops of the mountains above the valley. The hills are similar to most others in the intermountain west, meaning they change colors with the seasons.

A bit of trivia. Boise comes from the French, Le Boise (spelling may be off) which translates the trees or forest. IIRC, the French trappers were impressed with the gallery forest along the Boise river, in a desert brown.

Heh, heh. The gun may be free, but we charge a lot for the ammo.

As to the suppressor and full auto, yes you can get the license for either and pay the fee, but a full auto may coast you $10,000 or more as the eligible supply is limited. There is a full auto gun club here though.

Based on this - sounds like you definitely need to visit as it could be a complete toss up if you like it or not. Boise is a city and does have a bit of a city feel (this was recently argued on this board). So there will be concrete and tallish buildings and an "urban scene" or "hipster scene" - whatever you want to call it. Boise is really pushing density. That is pretty much isolated to Boise though. The suburbs are pretty standard and are just like California suburbs, just not as expensive. Boise itself is relatively left leaning, definitely compared to the state as a whole.

Weather-wise the closest comparison may be The Antelope Valley in California. Both places are high desert. Boise is cooler in winter and not as hot in summer and has a better defined spring. The comparison ends there as The Antelope Valley is pretty terrible otherwise.

And as far as your concerns about not fitting in or assimilating. Idaho and California are both states in the Western U.S. People aren't going to speak much differently if English is their first language. I don't know that Californians or Idahoans have distinct mannerisms. People won't be able to pick you out in a line up or anything.

I'm sure you know - but you can go to Google and type "Boise" and scan images. It is a fair representation of the area's scenery and cityscape.
