The only paper for Boise? I'm thinking of moving there in a year and want to start getting the local paper.

The Boise Weekly covers some local news.

Also Boise Public Radio online.

I read the online versions of these regularly to see what's happening in my future home

To the OP's question, a simple yes. While newspapers are suffering in general, the Idaho Statesman remains the major newspaper in Boise, and in the State. But they are not immune to the pressure of this media. I would expect that they will follow the subscription model that most major papers have gone to in recent years. I don't know that for fact, however. For now, though, they have the best reporting of Idaho news, IMO.

The Statesman is the only daily in Boise, so the answer to your question is yes. It covers Boise reasonably well but it's interesting that the Spokesman-Review (Spokane) arguably covers the Idaho Legislature better than the Statesman.

The Boise Weekly is an 'alt weekly' and is free. It can be an interesting read but is definitely not the same as a daily.

So when, and if, will the Statesman start a subscription service? This is the trend.

What do you mean by a subscription service? They offer print, digital only or both depending on what you want.

On-line but only if you pay. The Seattle Times and many other papers do this today.

They already restrict their online access. You get a limited amount of free articles per week or month or something, but I can't remember the amount. I don't see them going online only like the Seattle PI - among other reasons, the Statesman is basically the only gig in town so there's limited competition on local news coverage.

The Times in Seattle still has a printed edition. The on-line is subscription, though they give you a free trial. You are correct, the PI is totally on-line, and since they went to this I have seen the quality decline, IMO. Such as leaving articles up for days at a time.
