I want to rent a house in Boise. I have 3 cats. The rent is $900. They are asking for a $900 deposit, and also a $500 non-refundable deposit for the cats. Do you think I am being over-charged on the 500 dollar non-refundable fee?

Nope, Pets require costly clean up after you go, above the Deposit.

That's what I charge per pet. Been burned too many times, and cleaning and carpet replacement gets expensive.

nobody charges $500 per pet, you are probably not even a property owner.

$500 seems pretty reasonable for three cats. That's a lot of cats.

Yeah as a cat owner, I can testify that odds are that out of 3 cats, at least one of them will pee outside the box a few times. That odor gets into the padding so that has to be replaced along with the carpet.

You're right, IdaD, 3 cats are a lot, especially for an apartment. I was surprised the owner of the townhouse agreed to 3 cats. Usually I fib and tell them I only have 2. But I don't feel like pet-hiding anymore. I suppose $500 is the price I pay for having 3. Two cats generally would cost me $250 total non refundable based on my experience apartment hunting the past 3 months. Thanks for everyone's answers.
