Hi everyone. So my younger brother was accepted to BSU as a transfer student and he's seriously considering attending next year. Given that I live in CA and the rest of my family is back East in Virginia, I'm trying to help him out and arrange a visit with him to Boise during the first weekend in December, since I'm so much closer than everyone else. With that said, neither of us is going to have a ton of time to check out BSU or the Boise area, so we'd like to make it as productive of a visit as possible. In all likelihood, he's going to defer his admission to the Fall, so he can take his time relocating, but he wants to get a clear picture about the school and city to know if it'll be a good fit for him. I've spent some time in Idaho Falls, but other than driving through the state to get to Yellowstone, I know next to nothing about Idaho, let alone Boise. I've heard great things about the school and area, and we are both excited to check out it out.
He's 24 and will be majoring in education and he has lots of high end restaurant experience, so he's hoping to find a job downtown or close to campus either serving or bartending. Are there any other specific neighborhoods we should scope out while we're there- not just for finding a job, but also housing? He'll likely need roommates, but he is trying to focus on his studies and finish school, so specific areas he should avoid would be helpful too.
Aside from checking out the campus, downtown, and other neighborhoods to look for housing/work, are there any places within an hour or so to do some hiking or to take in a view of the area? We won't have a ton of time, and I imagine it'll be pretty cold, but he's never really seen the Rockies or real mountains out west.
Any additional input/advice about Boise/BSU would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!
Sounds like he'll be a typical BSU students. No issues there.
Just a matter of coming and checking things out. I'd explore BSU and downtown, the North End (for housing), the greenbelt, drive up to Bogus, drive to McCall, drive to Lucky Peak, hike up to Table Rock. That's about the extent of it, really.
A friend of mine is a professor at BSU. It's a great place. Downtown Boise near the university is fantastic! (It looks like San Jose... A cleaner version.) I think your brother will like BSU. I loved Boise and am hoping I can return soon.
