Hi, I'm a soon-to-be college grad looking into where I want to work after I graduate. I was wondering if anyone could speak to the amount and quality of trails available for horseback riders in the hills slightly north of Boise.

It seems like there are a lot of trails there and according to a website I found, the majority allow horses. Just hoping someone could give me a firsthand account. Are the trails rocky? Is there space to gallop? Is it feasible or legal to ride off trail? Are there lots of barns in the area or is trailering the only option?

And if anyone could let me know about the Boise horse community in general as well that would be great. I know board rates are very reasonable compared to where I am in Connecticut, I'm just hoping to gather enough information before I set my heart on moving myself and my mare.

Lots of equestrian properties, riding trails and reasonable places to board in Eagle and Star.

Idaho has lots of public lands that can be used to ride your horse on. A lot of the land in the Eagle area is BLM ground so you can have access. Some communities are more designated as equestrian friendly with community riding arena's or trails that access public lands while others require you to ride on the street to access the public spaces.

Most of the trails are not too rocky. Some of the mountainous trails are a bit steep while others traverse gentle slopes.

Here is a link that is a bit old, but still useful regarding riding in Idaho on public lands. Public Lands – Backcountry Musings
