I am now seriously considering move to Boise after visiting recently. My boyfriend is considering joining me, but worried about a drastic drop in income for his business.
He is a skilled carpenter who makes custom cabinets and refinishes cabinetry for kitchen remodels. He is unbelievably busy in southern CA and has excellent reviews on Angie's list and Yelp. I think his business could pretty easily transfer, and though his income would decrease, so would cost of living.
Am I right that this business would likely do well in Boise? He thinks his reviews being all from So Cal may count against him...
If he can survive well in one market, he should do well in another. He should decide if he wants to do new construction homes or remodels. New homes typically pay less, but they are vacant and go faster than working around home owners. The local building contractors association has members for new homes as well as remodeling contractors.
I would not be too concerned about the reviews being from another area as many people that live here are from somewhere else as well.
I am glad you recognize both the pay differential and the cost of living. Typically, if your pride can get over the lower wage, it does balance out.
