Hello community. Please excuse any grammatical errors or typos as I'm speaking into my phone. My spouse in myself, yes we are same-sex married for 5 years, are considering purchasing a home and Caldwell Idaho. But we are both coming from Southern California, are home states are different. I am from the east coast and my spouse is from the south. We are wondering what the community is like as far as acceptance of same-sex married couples. We are female, highly educated, I am retired military 100% disabled veteran, though not incapacitated. We love to be part of a community that we move to we are not moving there to impede upon anyone. We are fed up with California have been for number of years and are just looking for a slice of peace and beauty. I am 60 and my spouse is 52. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Out of curiosity, I just did a quick Google search for "does idaho recognize same sex marriage". The first page of results are not encouraging, (for you in your circumstance). It looks like it is an continuing, ongoing battle. On a personal level, I don't believe you will run into many issues. However on a legal level, expect some roadblocks and frustration.

I thought this was decided at the Supreme Court level and that it's no longer a question of "legal" or not? It is legal.

Yep, it is legal, no question about it. A week after legalization in 2014, 100 same sex marriage licenses were issued in Ada County per Wikipedia. Boise is inclusive and pro same sex marriage so it shouldn't be an issue for any same sex married couple moving into the area. There are a lot of same sex married couples in Boise and some have children. Of interest, in 2015 there were 316 same sex marriages in Idaho. https://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/P...6_Marriage.pdf

There will always be some resistance amongst a few people in the state government (a national issue, not unique to Idaho), but they are just beating a dead horse if they decide to fight the legality. I did a google search as well and it appears there are two lawmakers (Ron Nate, Rexburg and Steve Hartgen, Twin Falls) who are uncomfortable with it.

On a fun side note, a Boise brewery released this beer for our Governor when he was wasting tax payer money fighting the issue back in 2014:

If you are LGBT in Idaho, best to stick with places within Boise city limits, within Moscow city limits or inside inner-Coeur d'Alene south of the I-95 belt. Those are all relatively liberal areas where sexual orientation is not an issue. Outside of those places, nothing can be guaranteed and you may experience harassment and/or discrimination.

This is a good article from 2014 re: Idaho's homophobic social climate. I still think it's applicable:

That happens in every state, unfortunately.

Look at California:

I have multiple same sex couples working for me in Boise, Pocatello, and Idaho Falls.
No one cares. Its your business. You may run into the occasional outlier, but that was the same when I lived in CA.

Caldwell is very accepting of same-sex couples. Several community leaders are in same-sex relationships.

Many of Caldwell's leaders are in open same-sex relationships.

My opinion is that you should come and visit for a couple of weeks. Walk around. Go to parks. Go shopping. Go to the farmers market.

Feel the air and decide how comfortable you feel.

The PNW used to be very live and let live. Some areas have become progressive and intolerant. They won't tolerate anyone who doesn't toe their party line. I haven't yet run into that attitude in Idaho, but I'm sure it will get here eventually.

As a generalization, no one is going to care what you do as long as you are not harming anyone. But I don't know Caldwell, so no guarantees on that.

I don't care where you go in the world. Every place will have their very own nut case wandering around. You can't escape it, so there might possibly be someone who is rude to you.

One of the things about live and let live: it applies to everyone, so if there is a local nutcase, that person is tolerated just like everyone else, up to the point where they become destructive.

Come and check the city out carefully. You are the only one who can tell how well the area suits you.
