What are your thoughts on living in a house that is right next to a canal -- I mean, built nearly on top of one. It's not a huge canal. Would mosquitoes be the worst worry - or maybe there's enough current that they are not an issue?

I own a property next to a canal and it's great! It's about ten feet wide and two feet deep and is like a little stream running through the front of the property. Mosquitoes have not been an issue as the water is flowing, not standing. It's a pretty water feature!! I've never heard of canals flooding or being a problem. Some people with small children see them as safety concerns. My kids caught water skippers and built "boats" and had a ball. Generally, from a real estate perspective (I have been a top producing agent for 16 years), backing to a canal is a plus value-wise. They typically provide extra green space and a buffer between neighbors. If you have a specific address you want to PM me I can give you specific thoughts.

I got one, french doors out the master bedroom on to a private deck overlooking the irrigation canal. Nice trees line the canal and ducks swimming by. Love the canal. Meridian.
