Why does Boise have a higher rape statistic than the national average? Is it because there are disportionately more predators in Boise or does it reflect lumping all sexual crimes as rape (including consensual sex between teenagers)?

In Idaho, a LOT of things are lumped into sexual assault that are pled down to lesser offenses in other states. They really prosecute rape heavily here.

Why do you think it's high? Not sure what you're looking at to come to that conclusion. For the year 2007 it shows 119 cases of forcible rape in Boise (not the metro area). It's actually down from 2006.

No cases of rape are good, but I would bet that considering the population size, 119 is very small compared to other areas.

The majority of rape crimes are committed by someone known to the victim, also I've read that they generally occur in victims under 18(double check me on that one, but I believe there's data out there that will verify this. I guess what I'm trying to say........I wouldn't be that worried about it. Boise has consistently been touted as one of the safest places to live in the country; I'm sure your friend will be just fine here.

I don't have any statistical data to prove this, however I seem to notice rape statistics are higher in college towns. It would be my guess that the number is inflated by cases of girls who report non-consensual sex after a night out.
